Dinner inside the Grays River Covered Bridge

One of the highlights of the annual Columbia River Country Days is the Grays Rive Covered Bridge Dinner. It will take place Saturday evening at 4:30, right inside the bridge. In past years, outstanding area chefs have produced a lavish meal featuring the best of what our area has to offer.

Advance tickets are available at the local Bank of the Pacific branches in Naselle and Cathlamet. If you book with us this weekend and are interested in the dinner, we will get tickets for you.

New: Vacation Rental Apartment

New this year is a vacation rental apartment that can sleep two couples. There is a full bed in the bedroom and a queen sleeper in the living room. The kitchenette has a range, sink, small fridge, microwave, coffee maker plus pots, pans, dishes, and utensils.

A flat screen TV is internet ready and we subscribe to Netflix. Unfortunately there is no off-air signal here and we are not cable subscribers.

Free wifi to access your important online stuff. You can book it online through our B&B web site.

Baking with fresh yeast

I recently came across a bakery in Astoria where I can buy fresh baking yeast. Advantages? No proofing required, although I've never had a problem with the dry yeast. Years ago, when working at a whole foods restaurant and shop, we used it and sold it there. Home bakers could buy small amounts without having to buy it by the pound, as it is sold locally in Astoria. I think the dough is more supple when using the fresh, and that the finished loaf is slightly more tender, a quality my better half likes a lot. At any rate, it is now a part of the standard recipe for our cottage loaves. Our local Skamokawa grocery store sells our loaves. See what you think.

Keeping things sweet

We made and sold over 30 pies of different sizes and fillings at the Skamokawa Vista Park 30th Anniversary Celebration.

Sort of got me on a roll.

Guests had a choice of two breakfast quiches this morning. Spinach/Feta cheese or Mushroom/Zucchini with Tillamook Extra Sharp Cheddar.

Thought I'd round things out tonight by making a pecan pie. For this one you toast the pecans in a hot pan first, add 4 tablespoons of butter, then add the toasted pecans and the butter to your pie filling before baking.

Yum.

A Worth-the Drive dinner option

For those who travel south to visit us, the 42nd Street Cafe' on the Long Beach peninsula now has a 'happy hour' dinner special:

Early diners get a package deal on some of their comfort food classics, plus Happy Hour prices on Wines By The Glass (all for just $5). You'll get Salad or Soup, an Entree and a Mini-Dessert. for only $20. All diners arriving by 5:45 will receive a special menu offering this special price.

The 42nd Street Cafe' is about an hour's drive from Twin Gables.

You can enjoy a taste of the Twin Gables kitchen with pie-by-the-slice, locally at Sharon's Pizza and More in Cathlamet. Try a slice of Apple Raspberry.

Starting in mid-May, you can enjoy a Saturday Morning Breakfast, from 6am to noon, in our dining room. Stop on by and spoil yourself. We are a proud participant in the Wahkiakum Food and Farm Network.

Our recent guests are avid paddlers, and Skamokawa is a great place to paddle. From the quiet waters of Brooks Slough and Skamokawa Creek, to the challenges of the Columbia, this is a place for new, and experienced kayakers and canoeists. Kayaks and canoes can be rented just down the creek (a five minute walk) at the Skamokawa Center, or you can lauch your own (as our guests did) from our dock.
